SOPA DE FIDEO 
2 tbsp. shortening
1/2 lb. vermicelli, broken in pieces
1 lb. ground beef
3 mini cloves garlic
2 c. thinly sliced onions
1/2 c. green peppers
2 c. thinly sliced celery
1 1/2 cans corn
1 tbsp. salt
1 tsp. pepper
1 to 3 tsp. chili powder
1 (2 1/2 lb.) can tomatoes
1 c. water
8 oz. pkg. American cheese slices

Saute vermicelli in shortening until lightly browned. Brown ground beef, pour off grease. Add vermicelli. Stir in next 8 ingredients. Add tomatoes and water and stir gently. Simmer, covered for 25 minutes. Place cheese slices on top of mixture. Cover and cook 5 minutes.
