LOAF O'GOLD CAKE 
1 3/4 c. flour
1 c. sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1/2 c. soft shortening (half butter)
1 tsp. vanilla
5 egg yolks (3/8 c.), unbeaten
3/4 c. milk

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and line with paper a loaf pan, 9 x 5 x 3 inches. Blend dry ingredients in bowl. Add shortening, vanilla, egg yolks and milk. Beat 4 minutes, medium speed on mixer. Spoon batter into pan. Bake about 50 minutes. Cool. Serve with warm Vanilla Sauce.

VANILLA SAUCE:

1 c. sugar
2 tbsp. cornstarch
2 c. water
1/4 c. butter
2 tsp. vanilla

Or 2 tablespoons lemon juice with 2 tablespoons grated lemon rind or 2 teaspoons nutmeg.

Mix sugar and cornstarch in saucepan. Gradually stir in water. Boil 1 minute, stirring constantly. Stir in butter and flavoring. Makes 2 cups.
