WALNUT DATE ORANGE BARS | |
1 c. shortening 1 c. brown sugar, packed 2 eggs 2 1/2 c. sifted flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. vanilla FILLING: 15 slices orange slice candy 1/2 c. pitted dates 1/2 c. granulated sugar 2 tbsp. cornstarch 3/4 c. water 1 c. chopped walnuts Cream shortening and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time and beat until smooth. Resift flour, soda and salt. Mix in dry ingredients and vanilla. Then cut orange candy into 8ths with scissors. Put in saucepan with dates, sugar, cornstarch and water. Bring to a boil. Cook until thickened. Stir in walnuts. Cool. Spread half of the batter into a 9 x 13 x 2 inch baking pan. Cover with filling and spread remaining batter on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes or until brown. While warm, cut into squares or strips. Makes 3 dozen bars. |
