2 c. milk 1 tsp. salt 1/2 c. Crisco 3/4 c. sugar 1 rounded tsp. anise seed 1 tsp. anise extract 1 pkg. yeast 2 tsp. sugar 1/4 c. lukewarm water Scald 2 cups milk. Remove from heat, add 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 cup Crisco, 3/4 cup sugar, 1 rounded teaspoon anise seed, 1 teaspoon anise extract. While this cools put 1 package of yeast, 2 teaspoons sugar into 1/4 cup lukewarm water. When milk is cooled to lukewarm, add yeast mixture, then 3 cups flour. Stir and beat well. Let rise 10 minutes. Add 2 or 3 more cups of flour and hand knead well. Let rise to double bulk. Take a small handful of dough, roll lightly on floured board or in your hands to long slender strip. Make in shape of a "B". Let rise and bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes. When done and still hot, brush with a glaze of sugar milk and anise extract. Stir glaze often as it tends to get sugary. |
