APPLE CAKE
2 c. fine dry crumbs from a good white or French bread
2 tbsp. sugar
1/2 c. butter
2 1/2 c. sweetened applesauce

Roll, or whirl crumbs in the blender, or put through the grinder. Mix with sugar. Melt butter in a heavy skillet. Add crumbs and cook, stirring, until browned and crisp; cool. Put a layer in the bottom of a serving dish. Cover with a layer of sweetened applesauce, repeating until the ingredients are used. The top layer should be crumbs. Chill; cover top with sweetened whipped cream with a few dabs of currant or raspberry jelly for garnish. Makes 6 servings.

Note: This dessert cake needs no baking. This could be an emergency dessert in case of unexpected guests. Use bread crumbs from box, cook as above. Use applesauce from can (naturally it is better when homemade). Use Dream Whip instead of whipped cream. Excellent dessert for church supper or pot luck.
