1 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. shortening
1 egg
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. baking soda
2 c. flour

Cream sugar, shortening and butter. Add egg and vanilla. Sift dry ingredients. Chill dough 1 hour. Make into balls. Flatten with glass dipped in sugar or roll out and cut with cutters.
