DATE BARS 
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
2 beaten eggs
1/2 c. milk
1 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. oatmeal

Cream sugar and shortening; add eggs. Sift together flour, soda, baking powder, and salt. Add with milk, then oatmeal.

FILLING:

1 c. dates
1 c. sugar
1 c. water
1/2 c. nut meats

Boil dates with sugar and 1 cup water until thick. Cool and add nuts. Spread 1/2 batter in 9 x 12 pan, then spread the date filling over this.

Pour remaining batter over filling to form third layer; spread evenly. Bake in 350 degree oven for 30 minutes. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Cut into bars.
