INDIAN FRY BREAD | |
4 c. all purpose flour 1 tbsp. baking powder 1 tsp. salt 1 c. warm water (115 degrees) Oil for deep fat frying In a large container, mix flour, baking powder, and salt. Make a well in the center of mixture. Slowly stir in water until mixture is consistency of biscuit dough (add more water if necessary). Knead lightly, folding over about 10 times or so, until dough is easy to hand but not stiff. Pull off a fistful and flatten with floured hands to about 1/4 inch thickness by slapping the dough lightly from one hand to another. Cut a 2-3 inch slash through the dough about an inch from the edge. Stick a long handled fork through the slash and transfer to a pot of oil, hot enough for deep frying, about 375 degrees. Remove when surface is golden brown and bubbly. Drain on paper towels. Serve hot - plain or with butter and sugar or make Indian taco with beans, seasoned meat, lettuce, tomato, and grated cheese. Makes 12-16 (5 inch) circles. |
