REFRIGERATOR PICKLE
1 gallon cucumbers, sliced 1/4 inch
4 c. sugar
4 c. vinegar, white or colored
1 onion, sliced
1 green or red or both peppers
1 1/2 tsp. turmeric
1 1/2 tsp. celery seed
1/2 c. pickle salt
1/4 tsp. alum
1 1/2 tsp. powdered mustard

Mix salt, sugar, turmeric, celery seed, mustard and vinegar, bring to a boil. Pack cucumber slices, onions and peppers in a gallon jug or plastic ice cream carton. Put in alum and pour hot liquid over it. Let set for a few hours and pickle will shrink and you can add more cucumbers. Refrigerate. Stir everyday for 5 days. Keeps a year in refrigerator. Be sure not to fill jug completely full with liquid because cucumbers will rise to the top and you may need to add more cucumbers in. You may even have to take out some of the solution.
