Shepherds Pie (Poor Mans Pie)

Vanessa, for a little variety, you might try adding green beans instead of peas. Also, I always mix my ground beef, corn and green beans with a little bit of tomato soup. That gives it a little moisture, some extra vitamins and a nice color.

Excellent! Vanessa, if you have other recipes, send them our way! Will definitely make this again. I used carrots instead of corn and added a package of gravy mix. Drain the meat.

Dearest Vanessa.
The poor man's shepherd pie recipe is great. It is called "poor man's" most likely because it is inexpensive, wholesome and nutritious. Some people cannot afford lamb and personally I don't like the taste of lamb. My daughter in New Brunswick, Canada introduced me to the same shepherd pie the way you make yours. I fell in love with the dish. My daughter is an American and so am I and I think it does not matter how you make the shepherd pie as long as you enjoy the taste of the food God provided for you. People are too picky. Vanessa, thank you for sharing your version of the recipe.

Well it turned out lovely for a first attempt, there are a few things I decided I will do differently next time around, one being use less peas and DRAIN them lol!! Peas have a very overpowering flavour don't they. So less peas maybe two extra potatoes and I think I was a bit skimpy on the cheese. I did add a bovril packet to the ground beef while cooking threw in some garlic and only used about 2 tablespoons of sugar as well. Thanks Vanessa, the simplicity of this recipe motivated me to try something I otherwise would have been intimidated by.

Vanessa,

Thank you for the recipe. My son and I made it tonight. I put a different twist on it though. I used frozen veggies instead of canned and I omited the sugar and put in brown gravy mix instead. It gave the meat a different flavor. I also used white cheese on top of the mashed potatoes.

Can't resist weighing in on this ;) As a Brit, from Northumberland, where we mainly farm sheep, shepherds pie was ALWAYS made with beef.

My Grandma and Mam always made it in a very similar way to this recipe, without the sugar (not something commonly used in traditional British savoury recipes)and adding a bit of Bisto gravy for moisture. Adding the veg to the mix was a good way of hiding it:) My Mam always had to leave a corner without cheese on it for me, cos I hated it as a child.

When I make Shepherds Pie now, I sometimes add garlic and a spoon of tomato puree (paste) or a little Worcester Sauce. I still call it Shepherds pie, too. This is what I call family food - a basic recipe that is different in every family, yet keeps the same name. Like a lot of Italian or French recipes.

I also made this pie with frozen and/or canned mixed vegetables. It's so fast and easy for those who have little time for preparations. I cut up the potatoes before boiling to save time before mashing, (takes only 7 minutes to cook then!) I add a beaten egg, garlic powder and white pepper to the mashed potatoes before adding them on top and baking. Delicious!! Also, I dissolve a beef bouillon cube in a cup of water to add moisture to the beef while browning.

Growing up, my mom made this but added brown gravy mix to the meat....we also would put the mixture on top of the potatoes. I still love it to this day.

This was a very good recipe. My family enjoyed it a lot. I put cream of chicken in it to make it more moist. So thanks a lot....:-)

I am Norwegian and I prepare the dish with ground turkey breast. Neil is only taking pride in the way the British would prepare the meal. Personally I and my French family would NEVER eat a baby animal (lamb). Oh add lots of Worcestershire sauce gives it a nice kick.
