This recipe is outstanding! American pie for American tastes. Brits should go back to eating kidney pie...

I love your recipe. As a vegetarian, I substituted homemade mashed cauliflower (season like mashed potatoes) for the mashed potatoes and chopped Portobello mushrooms for the ground beef. I used frozen peas and corn, but added no sugar. I seasoned everything with chicken base and it came out wonderful. Thanks for posting!

This is very similar to what I am used to, but I have never known it to contain so much sugar. I am concerned that it will be too sweet so will probably leave it out or at least reduce it greatly.

Start with 1 pound of hamburger cooked with a diced onion, garlic powder and salt and pepper. Drain fat. Add to a 9x12-inch baking pan add a can of sweet creamed corn and one can of kernel corn on top of the hamburger.

Use six serving powdered potatoes, cook according to instructions on the package... Spread on the top of the other mixture, sprinkle a handful of cheese over the top. Cover the pan with tin foil and bake at 350°F for 30 minutes.

I call this Papa's Shepherd's Pie.

Can you use instant potatoes instead of the 8 potatoes? Just wondering because I like the Idahoan instant potatoes. Not wanting to change the recipe because it sounds good.

 Average Joe (United States) replies:
Sure you can use instant! I just did. I used the box directions but the potatoes need to be creamy so I added another 1/4 cup of mild and doubled the butter. I done it to keep the potatoes from drying out while baking.
