3/4 c. sugar
1/4 c. soft shortening
1 egg
1/2 c. milk
1 1/2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt

Mix sugar, shortening and egg, stir in 1/2 cup milk; stir in flour, baking powder and salt. Put in greased and floured 9 inch square pan.

TOPPING: (3 VARIATIONS):

1/2 c. brown sugar
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Sprinkle batter with 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon

OR:

Apple slices
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 tbsp. sugar

Arrange apple slices in fancy design on top, pressing them slightly into batter; then sprinkle with 1 teaspoon cinnamon mixed with 2 tablespoons sugar.

OR:

2 tbsp. butter
2 tbsp. honey
1/2 c. well drained crushed pineapple

Spread top with 2 tablespoons softened butter, 2 tablespoon honey and 1/2 cup well drained crushed pineapple.
