CORA'S RAISED DONUTS 
1 egg
1/4 c. shortening
1/2 c. sugar
1 c. warm milk
1 pkg. yeast, dissolved in 1/3 c. water
4 c. sifted flour
1/8 tsp. baking soda

Combine all ingredients well. Knead 5 to 10 minutes. Place in greased bowl. Turn once. Cover and let rise until double - 45 to 60 minutes. Punch down. Divide in half. Roll to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with floured doughnut cutter with hole in center. Cover and let raise until very light - 30 to 45 minutes. Deep fry in hot fat (375 degrees) about one minute per side or until golden brown.
