OLD FASHIONED WHITE BREAD | |
2 1/4 c. milk 3 tbsp. butter 3 c. all-purpose flour 2 pkgs. (1/4 oz.) active dry yeast 2 tbsp. sugar 2 tsp. salt 2 3/4 to 3 1/4 all-purpose flour Heat milk and butter to 120 degrees. In large mixing bowl combine 3 cups flour, yeast, sugar, salt and warmed mixture. Beat at highest speed for 3 minutes. Add 2 3/4 cups flour and continue kneading 3 more minutes. If dough is sticky, add 1/2 cup flour. Place dough in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in warm place until doubled, about 1 hour. Punch down and divide into 2 equal parts. Shape each portion into a smooth ball, cover and let rest 10 minutes. Shape into loaves and place in 2 greased 9 x 5 x 3 inch pans. Cover and let rise in warm place until doubled, about 1 hour. Bake in preheated 375 degree oven for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and continue to bake 30 to 35 minutes. Remove from pans and cool on wire rack. Yield: 2 loaves. |
