1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. thick sweetened applesauce
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. sugar
4 eggs, well beaten
1/4 c. sour milk
2 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. nutmeg
3/4 tsp. salt

Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and applesauce. Beat thoroughly. Sift flour, measure and sift with baking soda, salt and spices. Add alternately with milk to first mixture. Beat thoroughly. Pour into well oiled loaf pan. Bake in moderate oven (375 degrees) about 45 minutes.

Jam or Jelly Cake: Substitute 1 1/2 cups thick jam or jelly for applesauce in Applesauce Spice Cake. Complete recipe in manner indicated.
