CHEF'S TORTE CAKE 
1/2 c. creamed shortening
1/2 c. sugar
4 egg yolks
2 tsp. baking powder
1/8 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
5 tbsp. milk
1 c. cake flour or 1 c. minus 1 tbsp. regular flour
4 egg whites
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
3/4 c. chopped nuts
1 c. whipped cream
1 1/2 tsp. confectioners sugar
1/4 tsp. vanilla
1 c. fruit, drained

Cream together shortening, 1/2 cup sugar and egg yolks. Mix in flour. Add baking powder, salt, 1 teaspoon vanilla, and milk. Beat well. Put in two 9 inch greased, floured AND wax paper lined pans. Mixture will be very thick.

Beat egg whites stiffly. Add 1 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Divide mixture evenly and spread over batter in pans. Sprinkle 3/4 cup chopped nuts over the top of each cake. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Cool.

Mix together whipped cream, confectioners sugar, 1/4 teaspoon vanilla and fruit (if desired). Spread between layers and on top.
