CHOCOLATE DATE NUT BREAD 
1 c. boiling water
1 c. dates, each cut into thirds
1/4 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
2 env. (1 oz. each) premelted unsweetened chocolate or 1/4 c. cocoa
2 c. all purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. chopped walnuts

Pour boiling water over dates, cool to lukewarm. Cream together shortening sugar, egg and vanilla. Stir in chocolate, sift together flour, baking soda and salt, stir in nuts. Place batter in greased 9 x 5 inch loaf pan. Bake at 350 degree oven one hour.
