1 1/2 c. boiling water
1 c. dates
1 3/4 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter
2 eggs, beaten
1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. chocolate chips
1/2 c. walnuts

Pour boiling water over dates with 1 teaspoon baking soda. Let stand and cool. Cream 1 cup sugar with butter. Add eggs, then dates. Sift together flour, salt and remaining soda. Add date mixture to dry ingredients. Mix well, 2 minutes. Pour into greased 9 x 13 inch pan. mix chocolate chips, remaining sugar and nuts. Sprinkle over batter. Bake 30 to 35 minutes in 350 degree oven.
