BUTTERMILK COFFEE CAKE 
2 1/2 c. sifted flour
1 1/2 c. packed brown sugar
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
3/4 c. butter
1 c. chopped nuts
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
2 tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1 egg
1 c. buttermilk

Sift together the first 5 ingredients. Cut in the butter until crumbly. Combine 1 1/2 cups of this mixture with the 1 cup nuts. Combine 1/4 cup of the crumb - nut mixture with the cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar. Set aside. Press remaining crumb - nut mixture into bottom of 13 x 9 x 2 inch buttered and floured pan. Into the remaining flour - butter mixture, beat in the soda, egg and buttermilk. Beat on medium for 1/2 minute. Pour batter in pan, sprinkle with the spiced topping. Bake at 350 degrees 40 to 45 minutes. Makes 15 to 20 servings.
