DATE AND NUT BARS 
1/2 c. shortening
3/4 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. cinnamon
1/8 tsp. nutmeg
1 c. sugar
2 eggs, unbeaten
1/3 c. boiling water
2 c. dates, chopped
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1 c. sifted flour
1/2 c. nuts, chopped

Blend shortening, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. Add sugar gradually and cream well. Add eggs, singly, beating well after each addition. Pour boiling water over dates and let cool. Add to creamed mixture and blend.

Sift soda with flour. Add to creamed mixture and mix well. Add nuts and blend. Spread mixture in 10x10x2 greased pan. Bake in 350 degree oven for 45 minutes; cool. Cut in bars and roll in powdered sugar. Makes 2 dozen. These take a little time, but they are well worth the effort.
