APPLESAUCE SPICE CAKE 
2 1/2 c. Gold Medal all-purpose or unbleached flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
3/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground allspice
1 1/2 c. applesauce
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. raisins
2 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 c. water
2 eggs
1/2 c. chopped walnuts

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 2 round pans, 8 or 9 x 1 1/2 inches. Beat all ingredients except Browned Butter Frosting in large bowl on low speed 30 seconds, scraping bowl constantly. Beat on high speed 3 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Pour into pans. Bake 50-55 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool layers 10 minutes; remove from pans. Cool completely. Fill and frost layers with Browned Butter Frosting. 12 servings.

BROWNED BUTTER FROSTING:

Heat 1/3 cup butter over medium heat until delicate brown. Mix in 3 cups powdered sugar. Beat in 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla and about 2 teaspoons milk until smooth and spreading consistency.
