Combine in an enameled or stainless steel saucepan 1 1/2 cups boiling water, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 lemon, sliced, 3 whole cloves and 3 cinnamon sticks. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Add 1 bottle full-bodied red wine such as a California Burgundy or Petite Sirah. Simmer 20 minutes do not boil. Strain and serve hot in punch cups with a sprinkling of freshly grated nutmeg. This makes 12 (3 ounce) servings. |
