EFFECTIVE DIARRHEA TREATMENT AND/OR DEHYDRATION | |
8-10 tsp. sugar 1/2 tsp. table salt 1 qt. water Stir together. Mixture should be only slightly salty; not more than tears. Give by nursing bottle, spoon or cup at first sign of diarrhea. Continue every 3 hours until patient urinates and the urine is pale in color. Orange juice or mashed bananas given with it will give the acid balance and potassium needed. Encourage the eating of crackers, cottage cheese, apples, bananas, and especially baked potatoes or boiled rice; avoid any fatty food. It is normal for the diarrhea to last 4 days and for some vomiting to occur. If you are in a foreign country, make sure the water is CLEAN. If the patient does not perk up in 48 hours, call a doctor. This is very good for the very young, the very old, and the very sick. It is promoted by UNESCO and U. S. AID. |
