CANDY CANE COOKIES 
1 c. soft shortening (half butter)
1 c. sifted powdered sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 tsp. almond flavoring
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. red coloring
1/2 c. crushed peppermint candy
1/2 c. sugar

Heat oven to 375. Mix first 8 ingredients. Divide dough in half. Add red color to half. Roll 1 teaspoon each colored dough on floured board into strips 4 inches long. Place strips side by side and twist together like a rope.

Put on ungreased cookie sheet and curve top down for handle of cane. Bake until lightly brown, about 9 minutes. Remove. While still warm, sprinkle with peppermint candy and sugar mixture.
