APPLE SQUARES
FILLING:

7 c. peeled & sliced apples (6-10 apples)
1 1/4 c. sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt

CRUST:

2 1/2 c. flour, sifted
2 tbsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. shortening
2 egg yolks with milk to make 2/3 c. (reserve egg whites)
1 c. corn flakes

ICING:

1 c. powdered sugar
3/4 c. water

Mix filling ingredients and let stand. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Mix crust ingredients thoroughly. Roll out half of dough on a floured surface so edges hang 1/2" over sides of cookie sheet. Crumble 1 cup corn flakes over bottom crust. Spread apple mixture over bottom crust. Roll out remaining dough with enough excess to fold over bottom crust. Crimp edges tightly. Beat egg whites until frothy. Spread over top crust.

Bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes. While still hot, drizzle icing mixture over top.
