ANNIE'S DATE BARS | |
1/2 c. butter 1 1/4 c. flour 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 c. sour milk 1 tsp. baking soda 1 c. quick oats FILLING: 1 c. chopped dates 1 c. chopped nuts 1 c. water 1 c. sugar Combine butter, flour and salt. Work together as for pie dough. Mix baking soda into sour milk. Add alternately with quick oats to the flour mixture, using only enough of the milk/soda to get dough easy to handle. May or may not use all of the milk. Divide dough into 2 parts. Roll thin as possible between wax paper. Place 1 piece of rolled dough on cookie sheet. Spread on cooked filling and cover with the other piece of rolled dough. (Cook the filling to the consistency of jam or preserves and cool. It is best to do this before making the dough.) Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes. Cut into diamonds when cool. Dust with powdered sugar. |
