FINNISH COFFEE CAKE 
1/2 c. scalded milk
1/2 c. butter
1/4 c. sugar
1 dry yeast softened in 1/2 c. warm water
3 cardamom seeds pounded in a cloth
2 beaten eggs
3 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt

Combine milk, butter, sugar and salt. Cool to lukewarm. Add yeast, eggs, flour and cardamom. Mix well with large spoon. Place in bowl, cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 hour).

Punch down and let rise in cool place 30 minutes. Divide in 6 pieces. Braid 3 strips together and place in greased bread pans. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes. Brush with icing of 1 cup powdered sugar and 1 1/2 teaspoons milk. Sprinkle with nutmeat and cherries.
