BREAD AND BUTTER PICKLES 
27 cucumbers (sm. or med.)
7 med. onions
1/2 c. cold water
Ice
2 c. sugar
2 tbsp. mustard seed
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 tbsp. turmeric
2 tsp. celery seed

Slice cucumbers thin. Melt 1/2 cup salt in 2 cups cold water. Pour over cucumbers and onions; add a lot of ice and let stand for 3 hours, drain. Mix sugar, mustard seed, cloves, turmeric and celery seed. Boil hard before adding cucumbers and onions. Bring to a simmer. Do not boil. Cook 30 minutes; stir with wooden spoon. Pack in jar and seal. Makes 12 to 15 pints.
