CROUTONS
2 tsp. vinegar
2 tsp. water
3 slices whole wheat bread
Salt
Garlic powder

1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Mix the vinegar and water; brush each slice of bread lightly with this mixture. Place on a baking sheet, sprinkle with salt and garlic and bake for 30 minutes.

2. Remove from the oven, cut into 1/2 inch cubes and return to oven for 15-30 minutes more until the croutons are crisp. Do not allow to darken or the croutons will be bitter, cool.

3. When completely cooled, store in a closed container or a plastic bag.

Variations: For an Italian flavor sprinkle with basil before baking. For a Mexican flavor, sprinkle with chili powder. Makes about 3 cups.
