OVEN SWISS STEAK | |
1 1/2 lbs. boneless beef round steak, 3/4 inch thick 1/4 c. flour 1 tsp. salt 3 tbsp. Crisco 1 (16 oz.) can stewed tomatoes 1/2 c. celery, chopped 1/2 c. carrots, chopped 2 tbsp. onion, chopped 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce 1/4 c. (1 oz.) American cheese, shredded Cut meat into four portions. Combine flour and salt; pound into meat, remaining flour reserving for sauce. Brown meat in Crisco; transfer meat into shallow baking dish. Blend reserved flour mixture into pan drippings in skillet. Add tomatoes, celery, carrots, onion and Worcestershire sauce to drippings and cook. Stir constantly until mixture boils. Pour over meat. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 2 hours or until meat and vegetables are tender. Sprinkle cheese, cover meat. Return to oven for a few minutes to melt cheese. Serves 4. |
