CHOCOLATE MERINGUE BARS 
3/4 c. shortening
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar
3 eggs, separated
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
2 c. sifted flour
1 (6 oz.) pkg. semisweet chocolate pieces
1/2 c. flaked coconut
1/2 c. chopped nuts
1 c. brown sugar

Beat together shortening, white sugar and 1/2 cup brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg yolks and vanilla to mix well.

Sift together baking powder, baking soda, salt and flour. Add to creamed mixture. Pat into greased 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan. Sprinkle top with chocolate pieces. coconut and nuts.

Beat egg whites until frothy; gradually add 1 cup brown sugar, beating constantly. Beat until stiff. Spread over cookie dough in pan. Bake in moderate oven (375 degrees) 25 to 30 minutes. Set pan on rack to cool, then cut in 3 x 1 inch bars. Makes about 3 dozen.
