LUCILLE'S MARASCHINO CAKE 
3 c. sifted cake flour
1 3/4 c. sugar
4 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt

2/3 c. soft shortening
1/3 c. juice from cherries
2/3 c. milk
16 maraschino cherries cut in eighths

Beat. Fold in 1/2 cups chopped nuts. Pour in pan (greased and floured). Bake 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Cook and finish with comfort icing.

COMFORT FROSTING:

2 1/2 c. sugar
1 c. white corn sugar
1/2 c. boiling water
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
2 egg whites

Boil first 4 ingredients to a soft ball stage and take pan off intense heat and let cool the length of time it takes to beat 2 egg whites stiff. Pour syrup slowly over egg whites. Beat until mixture holds its shape. Add vanilla and pile high on cake.
