CHEWY CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES 
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. butter
2 c. brown sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. cloves
2 tsp. nutmeg
2 c. applesauce
2 c. quick cooking oats
2 c. chopped nuts
2 (6 oz.) pkgs. chocolate chips
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking soda
3 1/2 c. flour

Cream shortening and butter. Add sugar and blend well. Stir in eggs. Sift dry ingredients and add alternately with applesauce. Stir in oats, nuts, and chocolate chips. Drop by teaspoon onto greased baking sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 12-15 minutes. May be frozen.
