ENGLISH TOFFEE BARS 
1 c. (2 sticks) butter
1 1/2 c. confectioners' sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1 c. brown sugar
1 c. quick-cooking oats
1 c. chocolate bits
1 c. chopped walnuts

Mix butter, confectioners' sugar, egg, vanilla and flour. Add brown sugar and oats. Pat crumbly mixture into 2 greased oblong pans, 13x9x2-inches. Bake at 375°F for about 15 minutes or until no imprint remains when lightly touched with finger. Do not overcook. Remove from oven. Immediately sprinkle 1/2 cup chocolate bits over each of the 2 pans. Place a baking sheet over pans so contained heat will soften chocolate pieces. Spread softened chocolate pieces evenly over crust with knife or spatula. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup chopped nuts on each pan. While warm, cut into bars.

Makes about 2 1/2 dozen bars.
