GRANDMA MCKINZIE'S CHOCOLATE CAT
SCRATCH CAKE
 
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
3 tbsp. cocoa powder
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tbsp. white vinegar
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup COLD water

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Mix dry ingredients directly in 9x9-inch baking dish to be used.

Make 3 holes in this mixture. In first hole: 1 teaspoon vanilla. Second hole: 1 tablespoon white vinegar. Third hole: 1/2 cup oil.

Pour 1 cup COLD water over top and stir with fork until well blended.

Bake for 30 minutes at 350°F.

FROSTING:

1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter
1/4 cup milk
1 cup sugar
2 tbsp. cocoa powder
1 tbsp. cornstarch
1 tsp. vanilla

Mix first 5 ingredients in saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly for 1 minute. Remove from heat, add 1 teaspoon vanilla and beat until cool.

Spread over cake when it has cooled.
