WHOLE WHEAT SODA BREAD 
1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 c. whole wheat flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. sugar
6 tbsp. butter, chilled
2/3 c. buttermilk
Egg Wash, 1 egg yolk mixed with 1 tbsp. cold water

Place flour, whole wheat flour, soda, salt and sugar in large bowl. Cut shortening into flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add buttermilk, knead briefly and shape into round loaf. Place on greased pan with a sharp knife, cut a cross in top extending down the sides. Brush with egg wash. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes or until bread tests done. Remove from pan and cool on rack. Makes one round loaf.
