DOUGHNUTS 
3 1/2 tbsp. shortening
1 tsp. salt
4 1/2 tbsp. sugar
1 1/3 c. sweet milk
1 cake yeast
1 egg
4 c. flour
1 tbsp. vanilla

Cream shortening, salt, and sugar; add beaten egg. Add yeast that has been softened in a little warm milk. Add all other ingredients and knead. Let set to rise in warm place. Cut doughnuts and drop in hot oil to fry until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.

GLAZE:

1/2 lb. powdered sugar
1 med. size butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 c. water or enough to moisten

Bring to boil. Drop in doughnuts. Place on waxed paper to drain.
