SCONES 
1 2/3 c. flour
1 tbsp. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. buttermilk

Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in mixing bowl. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles rice kernels. Stir in buttermilk with a fork until mixture clings to itself. Form into a ball and knead gently, about 8 times on a floured surface.

Divide dough in half; roll each into a round about 1/2 inch thick. Cut each round into 6 wedge-shaped pieces. Place on ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 450 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Serve warm.
