DATE CAKE 
1 c. dates stoned and diced
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. boiling water
1 tbsp. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. nuts
1 1/2 c. flour

Mix dates, baking soda and water; let cool. Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg, salt and vanilla; add date mixture to this with nuts and flour. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes in a bread loaf pan greased.
