1/2 c. butter
1 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 sm. pkg. dates
1 egg
1 tsp. baking soda
2 c. flour
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. boiling water

Add boiling water to dates and soda. Let stand 30 minutes, add butter before it cools. Then add other ingredients, beat well and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

FILLING: Mix juice from 1 orange and 1 cup sugar, let it come to boil long enough to dissolve sugar, no more. Spread on cake while still very warm and let it soak into cake.
