CHILI CON CARNE 
1/4 c. shortening
1 lg. onion, minced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 green pepper, chopped
1 1/2 lbs. round steak, ground
1 1/2 tbsp. chili powder
1 tsp. salt
2 cans tomatoes or juice
2 cans red kidney beans or lima beans

Add onion, garlic and green pepper to shortening and saute slowly for 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove vegetables.

Saute meat in shortening about 15 minutes, or until well browned, stirring frequently. Stir in chili powder, salt, and sauteed vegetables. Add tomatoes, bring to a boil, and simmer, covered for 1 hour.

Add beans and simmer 20 minutes, adding hot water if mixture seems dry.
