BEEF EMPANADAS 
1/4 lb. ground beef
1 sm. onion, diced
2 tsp. chili powder
1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce
1 (2 oz.) can chopped green chilies, drained
1/2 tsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt

Fry meat, drain. Add rest of ingredients, heat to boiling. Simmer 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

CRUST:

1 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 c. corn meal
1/2 c. Cheddar cheese, shredded
1/4 c. shortening
5 to 6 tbsp. cold water

Mix ingredients to resemble coarse crumbs. Add water, 1 tablespoon at a time, mixing lightly after each addition until pastry is moist enough to hold together. Shape into ball and roll out, half recipe at a time. Use 5 inch round plate to cut 4 circles from each half.

Fill and fold dough over as with pasties. Bake on ungreased sheet at 350°F for about 15 minutes.

Tasty! Although not your typical empanada....more like an english meat pie cause it is baked.
