1 1/4 c. flour 1 tbsp. sugar 1/4 tsp. salt 1 tbsp. butter 1 egg 1/2 tsp. lemon rind 2 tbsp. milk Oil for frying Powdered sugar Mix flour, sugar and salt in mixing bowl or food processor. Cut in butter. Make well in center of flour mixture; add egg, lemon rind, milk. Mix to form a stiff dough. Add more milk if necessary. Turn out on lightly floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic. Cover and let rest 1 hour. Roll dough 1/16 inch thick. Cut into rectangles 3x4 1/2 inches. Make 3 lengthwise cuts in each piece of dough. The strips formed can be intertwined to form ties. Heat 1 inch oil to 365 degrees. Fry 2 pies at a time until puffed and golden brown. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Makes about 15 pastries. |
