SLOPPY TOMS | |
Call them Sloppy Toms when you use turkey, and sloppy joes when you use beef. EQUIPMENT: Measuring cups and spoons large skillet Wooden spoon Colander Medium mixing bowl Can opener Large spoon Plates INGREDIENTS: 1 lb. ground raw turkey or ground beef 1/2 c. frozen chopped onion 1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce 1 tsp. chili powder 1 tsp. prepared mustard 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce 8 hamburger buns, split 1 (4 oz.) pkg. (1 c.) shredded Cheddar cheese 1. Use your hands to break up the ground turkey or beef as you put it in the skillet. Add onion to the skillet. Put the skillet on the burner. Turn the burner to medium high. Cook, stirring with the wooden spoon, about 10 minutes or until there is no pink color left in the meat. Turn off the burner. Remove the skillet from the burner. 2. Place the colander over the mixing bowl. Spoon the meat mixture into the colander. Let fat drain into the bowl. Spoon the meat mixture back into the skillet. Put the fat in a container to throw away. 3. Stir tomato sauce, chili powder, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce into the meat mixture. 4. Put the skillet on a burner. Turn the burner to high. Cook until the meat mixture is bubbly, stirring now and then. Turn the burner to low. Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring now and then. Turn off the burner. Remove the skillet. 5. For each serving, put the bottom of a bun on a plate. Spoon some of the meat mixture over the bottom half of the bun. Sprinkle it with some of the shredded cheese. Cover with the bun top. Repeat for each sandwich. Makes 7. |
