SOURDOUGH FRENCH BREAD 
1 1/2 c. warm water
1 pkg. yeast
1 c. starter
4 c. flour
2 tsp. sugar
2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 or 2 c. flour (for kneading)

Pour water, sugar, starter, and yeast into bowl and mix. Add flour, salt, and soda; beat well, then knead in flour to stiffen until dough is satiny. Let rise until double; knead again and form into two loaves (oblong). Let rise until double. before baking, make diagonal slashes on loaves and brush with water. Put shallow pan with water in bottom of oven. Bake at 400 degrees until brown (about 45 minutes).
