DATE NUT CAKE 
1 c. dates, chopped
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. white sugar
3/4 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
2 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. chocolate chips
1/2 c. nuts, chopped

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Put dates and soda in bowl; pour 1 1/2 cups boiling water over mixture; set aside.

Cream together shortening, white sugar, 1/4 of the brown sugar, eggs, flour, and salt; add date mixture and mix.

TOPPING: Mix chocolate chips, remaining brown sugar and nuts. Sprinkle on top of cake. Bake 35-40 minutes.
