BROWN STONE CAKE 
1 c. butter
2 c. sugar
3 c. flour
3 eggs
1 c. buttermilk
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda
1 oz. unsweetened chocolate
1/2 c. hot water

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time. Add flour and buttermilk and mix. Add salt and vanilla. Lastly add the chocolate which has been dissolved in the 1/2 cup hot water, TO WHICH THE 1 teaspoon baking soda HAS BEEN ADDED. Bake in three 9 inch pans at 350 degrees for about 25 minutes.

FROSTING:

3 sticks butter
3 c. white sugar
1 1/2 c. Carnation milk
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
