OLD FASHIONED BUTTERMILK BISCUITS | |
2 c. sifted self rising flour 1/4 tsp. baking soda 1/4 c. Crisco or lard 7/8 c. buttermilk Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Lightly grease baking sheet; set aside. Combine flour and baking soda in bowl; cut in shortening with pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture is consistency of coarse crumbs. Add buttermilk and stir with fork just enough until dough leaves side of bowl. Turn out onto lightly floured pastry cloth or board. Knead gently just enough until smooth. Pat out to 1/2 inch thickness and cut into rounds with floured biscuit cutter. Place in baking sheet and bake 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Serve hot. Yields 12-14 biscuits. |
