1/2 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 3/4 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt

Mix sugar, shortening, egg and vanilla. Stir flour, soda and salt together; stir into sugar mixture. Form into roll 2 1/2 inch across. Wrap in wax paper; chill until firm. Cut into 1/8 inch slices and place on cookie sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 8-10 minutes.
