1 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. milk
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. butter
1 egg
2 tsp. cream of tartar

Spice or other flavoring may be used. If unsalted shortening is used, add 1/2 teaspoon salt.
